So I will admit Beau, Bobby and Brady Lewis are kind of my secret heroes.

Beau Lewis has a magnetic personality that encourages everyone he meets into an engaging and meaningful conversation.  I could talk to him for hours and just soak it all up.

This conversation scratched the surface on how the Lewis Cabinet Specialty family approaches business and growth. Two of my favorite topics.

So what was the Big Takeaway? What was the ONE thing?

Plain and simple, People.

When the brothers and the family all thought deeply about their ‘why’ and got to the core of what they desired there was a common thread. It wasn’t about sales volume, new machinery, bigger building; it was about people. The common thread they all share is their love for people.

Stop and really think about this as an owner, leader, or entrepreneur.

How many times have you said, “I can’t ever find the right person,” or, “If I just had the employees we could really take off.”

What would you say if I said that maybe it is not a personnel problem maybe it is a mindset problem?

What I mean is have you ever tried to get to your people’s ‘why’?

If you can tie their why to their success in the company, odds are going to be much higher for the company’s success. That’s not to say that you won’t still get a bad egg every once in awhile.

However, when you have a group of employees that are all invested in their growth in the company, the bad egg gets spotted quickly and tossed out of the nest. In what I would call a typical working environment, the bad egg ends up spreading a virus to several, if not all, the others and you have to restart over and over.

What We Learned from Beau Lewis:

1.Define the employees ‘why’ and align it to the company vision

2.The business growth strategy must involve people growth

3.Continued education benchmarks for moving up the ladder

4.Create a bonus structure that rewards people that are moving closer to their ‘why’

5.Create a bonus bucket that is a portion of the bonus pool that is for the people that are meeting all of their growth objectives.  Basically, if they are growing closer to their why faster than expected, reward them extra.  It creates a bit of a competition without actually having to compete.
